On the Buses
A few weeks ago on Facebook, I joined a group called "I Hate London Bus Drivers". Perhaps you think this is rather uncharitable of me. London bus drivers, after all, don't particularly have easy jobs - they drive through some areas where even the police seem reluctant to set foot, have to put up with the hectic London traffic, and also aren't paid a fortune. All these points are fair and true.

What I despise about London bus drivers, however - and in fact, let me extend this criticism to bus drivers generally - is the fact that for all their complaints, they've never been known for really making life easy for themselves. Over the past few years, I've witnessed:

1/ A bus driver being extremely racist to a black passenger, then ranting at his passengers when they defended the man ("Yeah, yeah, you lot, you don't know what I have to put up with, likes of him...")

2/ A bus driver slamming his doors shut on an elderly man with a walking stick who was struggling to get on board ("You're lucky I didn't hurt you then, you're supposed to notice when I'm shutting the bloody doors!")

3/ A bus driver nearly plouging into other bikes, cars and pedestrians. Actually, I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen this through dangerous driving.

4/ A bus driver threatening to throw "everyone" off his bus because "I'm sick of the lot of you". (It didn't work, and he eventually backed down).

There are lots of other trivial instances I've built a mental store of over the years. Yes, it's a tough job, but if you've got a repugnant, power hungry personality, a chip on your shoulder the size of Canada and you're trying to appease the general public, it's seldom a happy combination. I have friends who work with drug addicts and violent criminals, and all manage to get through a difficult and underpaid day without creating controversy.

I mention all the above because one of the less happy bus driving members of our group has been suspended by TFL for racism for the comments he left there, and indeed if I go over to the special "Why We Bus Drivers Hate The Public" Group he set up, I can see some lovely conversation is still rattling on:

"Let me tell you about the africans here. They wait til the last second to hail you, they take 30 seconds to get on the bus, they smell, they never have their money or smart card ready they never show their concession entitlement, they never purchase the correct ticket, they ring the bell and don't get up to get off the bus until you've been sitting still so long that you're about to drive off, they once again sit there fumbling around for their smart card and finally get off."

Lovely stuff. I'm really glad this group has made the headlines, it may only have a few members, but it's exposed an awful lot of what I'd hoped it would expose without even anyone really arguing that much with the drivers. Give these people enough rope, and they'll hang themselves.

Bring back the conductors, that's what I say. Everyone liked them.

Well, I never did hear back about the bus driver who shouted boo at me, causing me to crash my bike!

I'd hate to be a bus driver in London, I watch them getting all sorts of shit from passengers, but I agree: they don't make it easy for themselves. I often have to stand near the front doors and some of the stuff they say!

That's the other thing - if you complain to TFL about them, it seems you very rarely get any sort of response.

Ah, I miss the bus conductors, you know. Especially Duke Basie on the Number 73, honking away on his harmonica whilst selling fares. Getting rid of them is one of the worst things that could ever have happened to the service.

some bus drivers dislike passengers so much in fact

that they do not stop at request busstops. no matter how 'far in advance' you put your arm out and were effectively waving and considering jumping out in front of it. sod's law this tends to happen in cold/rainy weather too.

recently we've experienced a few busdriving bullies as we were cycling back to camberwell (on the south side of the river though, don't know if north is any better)

Taxi drivers and bus drivers are absolute arseholes to cyclists, it's something I've witnessed far too many times in any part of London. It's also extremely dangerous. So yes, I'm in agreement with you there.

I agree with you, the only nice ones in Liverpool are the Polish ones.

Well, there's the irony. The xenophobic, racist ramblings of the bus drivers on that Facebook group were sickening, but they did make me think "It's about time they got some foreigners in to replace the lot of you - they'd be much nicer". Of course, when TFL finally does employ more foreigners to drive the buses it will be treated as a big conspiracy, not as evidence that the original English lot were just plain shit at customer services and therefore less popular with the public.

When I walked up to grab the Hammersmith and City line on Saturday morning I found the train had just shut it's doors and was ready to go. As I passed the driver I pulled a glum face and then miraculously the doors re-opened and I and a pensioner with similar luck got straight on.

Which meant I was on time for my train into the Chilterns and a happy bunny for the rest of the day. Hurrah for you, mr tube driver.

But yeah, bus drivers, scum of the earth.

I have a friend who is a tube driver and would therefore never have a dig at them. Plus, they do some fantastic sarcastic and humorous announcements.

I remember a charming bus driver who refused to accept a woman's tube ticket after we were all evacuated from King's Cross (despite the fact that we were told they would be accepted) because he hadn't had word from the powers that be. He was incredibly rude and nasty to her. At the time, sirens were wailing from the station, and approximately 5000 people were waiting for buses. What more proof did he really need?

Rules is rules, don't you get it? If there were an inspector on the bus (which there never is) he'd get the boot, you see?

DO YOU WANT HIS CHILDREN TO STARVE?! (Not that he has any, nobody would be willing to procreate with him).

Today, proof (if ever it was needed) that ALL bus drivers, not just London ones, are cnuts.

Me: Do you go through Symonds St.?
Driver: No
[shuts door]
[I look at timetable, bus goes through Newmarket, therefore must go through Symonds St.. Knock on bus door. Door opens.]

Me: Do you go through Newmarket?
Driver: No.
Me: Are you the 386?
Driver: Yes.
Me: The timetable says you go through Newmarket.
Driver: I go through Broadway [which is in Newmarket]
Me: So you must go through Symonds St.?
Driver: Yes
Me: I'd like to go to Symonds St. [gives driver 50c]
Driver: That will be $1.60
Me: No, it's 50c!
Driver: 50c is for the inner city.
Me: It is the inner city!
Driver: I thought you wanted to go to Newmarket? [which he said he didn't go through]
Me: No, I want to go to Symonds St.!!
Driver: 50c please
